1. Garage Door Springs

For every pound a garage door weighs, that same weight in spring force must be applied to pull against it. This is done with springs. Either torsion springs, which torque specific parts of the garage door to balance the weight, or extension springs, which stretch on either side of the door to offset the weight.
Torsion Springs
Qualities of Torsion Springs:
- Balance the garage door by applying torque to the drum shaft at each end. It will wind and unwind as the garage door opens and closes.
- Can use one or two torsion springs depending on the weight of the door (two is safer).
Garage door torsion springs have 3 properties that influence their lift and life expectancy. The lift of torsion springs refers to how much weight the spring can lift. This is determined by the wire size, inside diameter, and length of the spring. The life expectancy – also called the cycle life, says how many times the garage door should be able to open and close before the spring breaks.
Extension Springs
Qualities of Extension Springs:
- Mounted along the sides of the garage door.
- Stretch and contract as the door opens and closes to offset the garage door’s weight.
If you are using extension springs with your garage door, it is recommended that you look for ones that have safety cables to prevent injury if the spring ends up snapping.

Transmitter is just another way of saying remote control or keypad that controls your garage door opener. Garage door remotes and keypads are how you interact with your garage door opener.
